Accompanying Persons

CHI 2005 welcomes Accompanying Persons 18 years of age or older to the Conference to share in the excitement of the event. Accompanying Persons registration is US $100 each and includes access to the Commons, Opening and Closing Plenary sessions, and the Conference Reception.

Alcoholic Beverages

Legal drinking age in Portland is 21.

ATMs

The Oregon Convention Center has three ATMs within the facility: the main MLK lobby, the Holladay lobby, and outside the main MLK entrance (next to the ticket office). There is a $2.00 fee per transaction.

Attire/Weather

CHI conferences are casual dress. A light jacket and/or sweater is suggested for the evenings. Weather in April averages 57 degrees F / 13 degrees C. The Convention Center is air conditioned and may be cool. You may expect a range of weather during the conference; we recommend dressing in layers.

Business Services Center

FedEx Kinko’s is located in the main MLK Lobby. Services include FedEx shipping, faxing, copying, computer printing, office supplies, sign and banner creation. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 9:00-18:00. Shipping, copying and faxing services are also available through each of the conference hotels. Participants are responsible for paying their own costs.

CHI Store

Pre-Function A, Lower Level Conference T-shirts, mugs, publications, and DVDs will be sold at the CHI Store located near Registration in the Pre-Function A area, Lower Level, of the convention center. The CHI Store opens at 12:00 on Sunday and will be open during registration hours.

Coffee Breaks

Regularly scheduled morning and afternoon coffee breaks take place in the Commons on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and are included in your registration fee.

The Commons

Exhibit Hall A/A1

The Commons is a large central area that is the site for all main conference breaks, Exhibits, Posters, and other interactive activities. Seating areas make The Commons the perfect place to meet with old or new friends, enjoy a refreshing beverage during a coffee break, or just relax between sessions.

Electrical Power

It is ACM SIGCHI policy to use the local power source. In Portland, electricity is supplied at 120 Volt, AC, single phase, 60 cycle. CHI 2005 does not provide power converters, extension cords, power strips or other electric accessories.

Information Booths

The CHI Information Booth in the Commons is staffed by CHI Local Members and Student Volunteers who can answer your CHI 2005 questions and assist with recruiting and special needs. The conference will offer local tours and a Lunch with a Local program; you will need to sign up onsite for these events.

The Visitors Information Center in the MLK Lobby is staffed by city representatives to answer questions regarding the convention center, provide directions, and assist with local attractions, tours, and dining options

Internet Access

Wireless high speed internet access for your laptop is being provided throughout the convention center. Up to 500 ports will be available at any one time, so please be considerate of your colleagues and limit your time spent online. Hard wire connections and computers are not provided. If your laptop does not have wireless capability, you will need to access the Internet through your hotel guest room.

Message Boards

The Commons

A telephone line for incoming calls will be available at the CHI Information Booth starting at 15:00 on Saturday. The number is +1 503 963 5701. Please do not call this number prior to 15:00 on Saturday 2 April. During the conference, messages can be taken for you at this number and posted on the message board. You may also use the message board to post messages for other conference participants.

Parking

Onsite parking is available in the OCC underground parking garage, located beneath the south side of the building. There are two entrances into the garage; the main entry point is directly off First Avenue into the P2 Level of the garage and the secondary entry is directly off of Lloyd Avenue into the P1 Level of the garage. In addition, there is public parking in the OCC Lloyd Lot (corner of MLK and Lloyd Blvd.) via a credit card only pay box. Parking rates are tiered by length of time in the lot, with an $8/day maximum charge. Satellite locations are also located nearby.

Recording Prohibited

The use of any type of audio or video recording device is not permitted during any part of the conference. The use of still cameras is permissible. However, reprinting photographs in print or electronic publications is prohibited without the written permission of the people photographed.

Recruiting Boards

Please check the recruiting boards in the poster area for information about career opportunities with these organizations. You may submit your resume in response to these opportunities to the CHI 2005 Information Booth in the exhibit area. Your resume will then be delivered to the appropriate recruiting representatives.

Registration

Pre-Function A, Lower Level

The CHI 2005 Registration area is located on the lower level of the Convention Center. Pre-registered participants (including workshops) must pick up their badges and conference materials in this area. On-site registration for the conference and tutorials is located here.

Smoking Policy

CHI conferences are smoke-free, and the Oregon Convention Center is a non-smoking facility. Smoking is only permitted outside of the facility in the designated areas.

Speaker Preparation and Rehearsal

Speakers may reserve a designated LCD projector in these rooms to help them prepare materials and rehearse for their presentations. Room hours are:

Special Needs

Any special requirements you may need should be relayed to the CHI Information Booth in the Commons at the earliest time possible.

Student Volunteers

Student Volunteers are a great source of information about the conference. Many are working on their Masters or Ph.D.s and some are looking for job or internship opportunities. They help give the conference a friendly, helpful face and work hard to assist during the whole conference. Please be courteous to them and feel free to ask them questions. You can identify Student Volunteers by their blue T-shirts.
